Shelter Island is a small natural gem that fits snugly between the North and
South Forks of Long Island. It is accessible only by ferry - a short ride from
Greenport on Long Island Sound, or North Haven, next to Sag Harbor.
Surrounded by Gardiners Bay and the Shelter Island Sound, there are numerous
pristine inlets, harbors and beaches - all perfect for swimming, boating and
fishing. Almost one-third of the island is protected as the Mashomack Preserve
a magnificent oasis of diverse wildlife with numerous hiking trails.
Tranquil and beautiful with an easy living style, there isnt a single traffic
light
on Shelter Island. But there is a diversity of hotels and restaurants, public
and private golf courses, and a quick ferry ride to the Hamptons and Atlantic
Ocean beaches. Not just a summer residence, Shelter Island is a growing
year round community serviced by its own police and fire department, two post
offices, a library and a school for grades K through 12.
